The Great Ocean Road

Great Ocean Road. Sounds familiar? No wonder. It’s one of the famous destinations in Melbourne. It’s not technically in Melbourne, but most of the people who come to the city will have Great Ocean Road on the bucket list.

It takes about 3 hours from Melbourne CBD to get there. It was said to be one of the most spectacular driving routes in the world. But I didn’t feel that it’s wow. At the end of the trip I knew why. Thanks to Google Maps I arrived there fast. But thanks again for keeping me away from the great road.

The reason why it’s called the Great Ocean Road is because the road is great, right? But when I was on the way, the view was only trees on my left and right. Forests all around me. Apparently, the maps got me going through inlad road. It was supposed to be the coast track. But maybe that’s because I typed Twelve Apostles, so I was directed there.

I wonder if the maps was like, “oh you’re going to the Twelve Apostles so you don’t need the great road, huh?”

By the time I finished exploring the Twelve Appostles and went back home through the coast track, it was already dark. Perfect! That’s why don’t ever go to a 3-hour drive place after 10 am! – talking to myself. Well, it sucks to be a morning person but to lazy to get up and get ready to do anything.

It was Aldi, my husband, who pointed to go to the Twelve Apostles. He saw his friends went there and he came up with the idea. But to be honest, I’d have no idea where to go if Aldi didn’t suggest it. I mean, it must be just a road next to the ocean. So???

It turned out that there are some lookout points and the Twelve Apostles is just one of them. I saw choppers were flying around. I thought the safe guards were patrolling. Soon I figured out that they’re meant for tourists. There are some areas around that can only be reached by the chopper.

I’ve never been on a chopper. I want to try but I don’t want to pay. It’s quite pricey. One ride is almost $150. Got to check the website for the exact fare. There were a lot of tourists grabbed the chance to fly with the chopper.

The chopper area is next to the Twelve Apostles. There’s a wide parking space with toilets and tourist information kind of thing with coffee shop in it as well. They sell souvenirs too if I’m not mistaken.

The path to the Twelve Apostles was hidden behind the tourist information building. It’s just a short walk to the lookout. The view was amazing! The thing that made it less beautiful was the amount of the tourists. Too many people at a small space. So taking a good photo was quite a challenge.

There’s nothing much to do besides taking photos and videos. So I tried to walk a little bit on the footpath on the other side. I took me to another small parking lot. I was like, whaaat??? I thought I’d be somewhere good but parking lot? Well, there’s a beach right under it, though. But the sand was wet so I didn’t go down. I didn’t want my shoes to get dirty because I didn’t want my car to be dirty.

Accross the parking lot there’s a massive land with a lot of sheeps on it eating peacefully. They’re so cute! It felt like I was in New Zealand – even though I’ve never been there.

After taking some photos, my husband and I walked back to the Twelve Apostles through the main road – the main road for vehicles. It was Aldi’s idea. He said it’d be faster because it’s just straight. But it’s dangerous! The cars ran so fast I was afraid to get hit. There’s no path for pedestrians. But we got back safely. That’s why I could write this article.

After all, the trip was fun! If I can go explore The Great Ocean Road, I’ll visit some more great spots for sure!
