Babinda Boulders – The Place You Didn’t Know You Needed

It’s Summer!

I know. It can be so freaking hot sometimes. In summer time like this, water will be nice, right? No worries, I have a place where you can swim and relax in the nature.

Babinda Boulders it is! Where is it? It’s in Queensland, 1 Munro St, Babinda.

Now the question is, are you in Queensland? If yes, you’re near! If not, book a flight! Heaps of interesting places here.

How To Get There

Alright, let’s start! The starting point is Cairns – it’s a big city and it’s easier from here. I won’t tell you the details of the direction because you can simply open your Google Maps. Just type Babinda Boulders, and there it is!

Just follow the direction (I hope your google maps is accurate. Mine is sometimes doesn’t want me to arrive at my destination). The reception is still okay along the way. Sometimes you’ll lose it but it’s not forever.

Before you get there, you’ll pass a small town – Babinda. I haven’t explored more, but I guess it’ll be quite interesting. Babinda is known as ‘The Umbrella Town‘ because of the rainfall it receives each year.

Alright. Let’s get back to the road. You’re almost there. In a blink of an eye, you’ll see the parking lot. It’s quite big. You’ve got toilets there as well.

Parking Lot Area

The parking lot is quite like a mini museum. You can see boards that explain the history about that place. You can spend some time reading them. Or if you don’t want to, just walk straight to the pool.

The Pool

What do you think of the first glimpse? When I first saw it, I was like… damn! Is this for real? Why’s the water so clear? Why’s there no current? Why does it look like a big swimming pool?

Are you thinking the same?

Okay then, I know the water is tempting, so just jump in! Although I wouldn’t do that if I were you. Touch the water first. Feel the temperature. Even if it’s summer, the water is still cold. Or it’s not that cold for you? Well then, pardon my Asian sense.

Is It Safe to Swim in Babinda Boulders?

Yes! Totally safe! When I was there, I saw a woman learning how to swim. She was taught by her son and daughter (I guess?). She wore a mask, snorkel, and fins! Good idea!

Besides the calm water, it’s not that deep. There’s the deep part, but also the shallow part. So, it’s very safe for kids and people who don’t swim well.

Chilling Out

I hope you don’t have thalassophobia – a fear of the ocean or other large bodies of water. Because I do! I love swimming. But somehow, I’m afraid of what’s underneath me while swimming. It always strikes me when I’m swimming in the deep water like seas, rivers, and lakes.

The Babinda Boulders has clear water but since it’s deep, I couldn’t really see the under. I really wanted to swim across like a group of people that time, but I just didn’t have the guts to. Aldi – my husband – was also afraid. We’re both a coward!

So, we just swam here and there near the shallow water. Well, who knows an anaconda suddenly pops up! God! I don’t want to think about it but it keeps coming to my mind!

Me trying to defeat my anxiety

Maybe, if you have a floatie or something like that, you can bring it and lie on the water, enjoying the vibes. But since I didn’t have any, I just relied on my body to do the floating.

Me trying not to think what’s underneath

The water is just so refreshing! Once you’re inside, I think you don’t want to leave. Yes, it’s cold at first, but you’ll get used to the temperature. If you bring your kids along, you can just play in the shallow part.

The Walking Track

Oh, it’s not just swimming. You can do another thing as well. There’s a walking track right beside the pool. Want to take a look? Let’s go!

The Sign
Warning Sign

I think the warning sign above is not for the pool area. Because the current there is just fine. No submerged rocks – nothing. So maybe, the sign applies to the walking track area.

The Track

It’s an easy track. You can either go before or after swimming. I kinda forgot which one I did. But anyway, I walked to the end. There are some lookout points (2 or 3 – I forgot). But all were surrounded by fences. So, we can’t see much.

First Lookout Point

I don’t recommend spending to much time at the first lookout point, just keep walking to the next one.

Wooden Bridge

After the wooden bridge, you’ll find the last lookout point. You can’t go anywhere but the end of the deck. But it’s better. You can see the view clearly.

The Last Lookout Point

What exactly can we see at the lookout point? Well, it pretty much took my breath for a while. I don’t know about you.

What do you think? Please let me know in the comments!

Maybe, that’s why it’s called The Babinda Boulders. Because the river is flanked by the boulders. It’s so pretty! I wonder how good it is if I can be down there. Too bad we’re not allowed to. Although I saw some teenagers went down from I don’t know where. I wanted to join them so bad! But I’d get fined for sure, if I got caught. So, all I could do was just admire it.

But I’m pretty sure it’s safe to be down there, right? Just to put the feet into the water, enjoy the vibes, and lie down while listening to the music. It’s summer anyway. No rain, no flood? But if there’s no permission, please don’t try to.
