Clamshell Falls – A Little Piece of Heaven Near Cairns

Here comes one of my favorite places in Queensland! Sadly, this is my last adventure in the state because I had to move out. It was the best farewell, though. So, let me give you a brief information about the place first. Clamshell Falls is a cascade waterfall on the Behana Creek, located in Wooroonooran, Cairns Region, Queensland, Australia.

I wonder why this waterfall wasn’t on the list when I looked for walking trails around Cairns. Every article pointed at Josephine Falls, Babinda Boulders, Millaa Millaa Falls, and sort of. Luckily, one day, Aldi, my husband, found it on Google. He’s not the type of person who likes researching before traveling. It’s always me who do the research. But when he does, he can always find something interesting.

At first, I didn’t expect anything from this place. I thought it’d be just like the other places I’d visited in Queensland. But…

How To Get There?

Before I spill the tea, let me tell you how you can get there. You can easily find it on Google Maps. It’s an easy way. Only 37 km southbound from Cairns. It might take less than an hour to get there. Enjoy the trip. You’ll be surrounded by beautiful green views.

Since I’m not good at describing ways, I don’t want to waste your time reading me blabbering. Google Maps is enough to take you there safely.

We’re Here!

You’ll know when you arrive. Yup! The signpost is clear enough. The thing that’s a bit unclear is the way to the falls. From the parking lot, there were 2 paths in front of me – to the right and to the left. I almost took the right one because the left one had a closed gate. So I thought, oh, it was forbidden to enter. But when I got closer, it was, yes, closed for cars and motorcycles, but pedestrians were welcome. I still wasn’t sure, though. But as I walked further, I found the other visitors, so it must be right!

Don’t blame me! It’s not like the other walking tracks I had ever been. Usually, the track was narrow with dirt road, but the path to Clamshell Falls was wide it could fit 1 car, I guess?

I didn’t expect it to be that far! I like a far walk but with that kind of path, I just didn’t think I’d walk long. The road is just straight. No intersection, no turns, nothing. But the surroundings are so beautiful! There are streams, small falls, big trees, lookout points. The birds and other animals I can’t name also gave peaceful sounds all along the way.

It is a 3.3km walk and don’t be surprised! There’s a steep incline that will take most of your breath away!

Behana Water Intake

After the very steep incline, trust me, you’re almost there! After a struggle, he comes the heaven! To be honest, I was kind of confused of which way to take to get down to the falls. The road led to a dead end. There’s a closed gate at the end. So, Clamshell Falls is also known as Behana Water Intake or Behana Creek.

The Closed Gate

Why does it have to have a triple name like that? Such a confusing place. But it’s worth the confusion! From that closed gate, there’s a small space to get down. It doesn’t look like a path, but it’ll do. The rocks made it easy to walk down. In a minute, I found paradise! I swear I got my mouth agape!

The Way Down

Clamshell Falls

It’s so good to be there! I want to go there again and have a swim! I didn’t swim at the time because the water was so freaking cold! I can’t resist the cold. I don’t like the cold! Maybe next time, I’ll bring a floatie, so my body won’t have to touch the water. It’s not a swim, though. Okay, how about I go there in the peak summer so the water will be warm? I doubt it, though.

The point is, I just want to visit Clamshell Falls again! I went there with a person I didn’t like, so it wasn’t a great trip. I felt pissed off most of the time. Luckily, the view slightly made me calm. No, it’s not my husband – although he pisses me off often – she’s my coworker. I didn’t like her since the beginning. This, with reasons of course. She just never listened, and I had feelings that she underestimated me and didn’t want to be friends with me. Well, she’s all about herself. I ignored all the hints and tried to be nice to her.

So, the day before I went to Clamshell Falls, I asked if she wanted to join me. She said yes happily. But I couldn’t be a fake person. So, I wasn’t as excited as I was in the other trips. I shouldn’t have asked her in the first place. I don’t know if she noticed it or not. I’m sure she did because Aldi, my husband, said my face showed everything.

Oh God, why am I writing all this here? Anyway, my annoyed feeling that day didn’t make Clamshell Falls less beautiful. Trust me! All I’m trying to say is that for you to go there with the people you feel comfortable with.

Someone Jumping off The Rock

Oh, if you want to swim, make sure the current is not strong and please don’t swim alone. I don’t want you to disappear. Also, if you’re a fan of jumping off the rocks, you can do so. I saw people did it. Just make sure it’s safe, okay?!
